I do not understand why they don't make more diesel, and why diesel is more expensive than normal car fuel, as it needs less refinement. Of course if they make less they can keep the price up, but I live in a neighborhood with lots of truckers and I feel sorry for them, it costs so much to keep their 18 wheels running! (been trucking with hubby for a while as well, now retired)

The US doesn't have surge capacity. Locally it could produce more, but country wide it would be a drop in the bucket. Quality and type of oil to refine also come into play. Basically the US offshored most of the refining to China and Russia
